Ayurveda is one of the oldest holistic healing systems that originating over 5,000 years ago in India. The word Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit word ayu, meaning life and veda, meaning knowledge. Therefore, the meaning of this Sanskrit word is “Knowledge of Life.” The earliest references to Ayurveda are found in the Vedas, the most ancient Hindu scriptures known as the Atharvaveda. The origin of Ayurveda is attributed to Dhanvantari, who, according to Hindu mythology, is the God of medicines and an avatar of Lord Mahavishnu. It is widely practiced in several parts of the Eastern world, especially in India. There, the Ayurvedic form of holistic healing is used by a large cross section of the population either exclusively or in combination with modern medicine.
