THE BASICS OF AYURVEDA

Here is what you need to know

Ayurveda is one of the oldest holistic healing systems that originating over 5,000 years ago in India. The word Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit word ayu, meaning life and veda, meaning knowledge. Therefore, the meaning of this Sanskrit word is “Knowledge of Life.” The earliest references to Ayurveda are found in the Vedas, the most ancient Hindu scriptures known as the Atharvaveda. The origin of Ayurveda is attributed to Dhanvantari, who, according to Hindu mythology, is the God of medicines and an avatar of Lord Mahavishnu. It is widely practiced in several parts of the Eastern world, especially in India. There, the Ayurvedic form of holistic healing is used by a large cross section of the population either exclusively or in combination with modern medicine.

Principles of Ayurveda

According to the Ayurvedic school of thought, human body is constituted of three doshas: Vata, pitta and kapha. This ancient holistic healing system is based on the principle that a disease is caused by an imbalance in a person’s unique constitution, or prakriti. Therefore, it encourages natural therapies to regain an internal balance between these doshas. Like Western medicine, it focuses on both the preventive and curative aspects of healing.

How does Ayurveda heal?

The preventive aspects of Ayurvedic healing involve various exercises such as yoga, meditation, massage, and the use of herbal remedies. The curative aspects of Ayurveda involve the use of herbal medicines, physiotherapy, and diet. A key aspect of the techniques used in this healing system is that it is customised for everyone.
