Hair Damage: What Causes It and How to Protect Your Hair

The most useful thing to understand about hair is that the strand itself is not alive. Once it leaves the follicle it is a structure of keratin with no blood supply and no capacity to repair itself.
This changes what any product can honestly promise. Nothing repairs damaged hair in the way skin heals. What good products and habits do is smooth the outer layer, hold moisture in, and prevent further damage—which is worth a great deal, because most hair damage is cumulative and most of it is avoidable.
Here is what causes it, what protects against it, and when hair changes point to something worth investigating.
How Hair Gets Damaged
Each strand has an outer layer called the cuticle, made of overlapping scales that lie flat when hair is healthy. Flat scales reflect light, which is what shine actually is, and they hold moisture inside the strand.
Damage lifts and chips those scales. Once they are raised, the strand loses moisture, catches on itself, tangles, looks dull, and eventually splits. The damage accumulates from root to tip over years, which is why the ends of long hair are always in worse condition than the roots—they are simply older.
Heat
Straighteners, curling tongs and hot dryers are the fastest route to cuticle damage, and the temperature matters more than the frequency. Most styling tools run far hotter than necessary, and using hot tools on hair that is still damp is considerably more damaging than using them on dry hair.
Chemical treatment
Bleaching, permanent color, perms and relaxers all work by opening the cuticle to reach the inside of the strand. That is the point of them, and it is also why they cause structural damage that does not reverse. Bleach is the most damaging of the group.
Mechanical damage—the one people underestimate
Hair is at its most fragile when wet, because water makes the strand swell and stretch. Vigorous towel-drying, brushing wet hair from the roots, and tying it up while soaked all do more damage than most people realize.
Tight styles matter too. Persistent tension from tight ponytails, buns, braids and extensions can cause traction alopecia—hair loss from the pulling itself, usually at the hairline and temples. Caught early it recovers; sustained for years it may not.
Sun, salt and chlorine
Ultraviolet light degrades the proteins in hair, chlorine strips its natural oils, and salt water dries it. None of them mean avoiding summer, but rinsing hair with fresh water before and after swimming makes a real difference.

Hair Oiling
Applying oil to hair before washing is one of the oldest hair practices there is, and it has a sound mechanical basis. Oil on the strand reduces how much water the hair absorbs during washing, and less swelling means less stress on the cuticle. It also adds slip, so there is less tugging when you detangle.
Coconut oil is the most commonly used for this and penetrates the strand better than most alternatives. Apply to the mid-lengths and ends, leave for at least half an hour, and wash out.
In Ayurveda the practice extends to the scalp as Shiro Abhyanga, a head and scalp massage with warm oil, done for relaxation as much as for the hair. The massage itself is pleasant and settling, which is a reasonable thing to want from it. Claims that oiling makes hair grow faster are not well established—treat it as protection and comfort rather than growth.
Diet and Hair
Hair is built from protein, and it is one of the first places the body economizes when something is short. Two nutrients matter most.
Protein. Insufficient intake shows in hair over months rather than weeks. Legumes, eggs, dairy, tofu, nuts and fish all count; the source matters less than getting some at each meal.
Iron. Low iron is a well-recognized cause of hair shedding, and it is common—the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute describes iron-deficiency anemia as the most common type of anemia. Women aged 19 to 50 need 18 mg a day against 8 mg for men, and heavy periods are a frequent cause of low levels. Good sources include beans, lentils, tofu, dark green leafy vegetables, eggs and lean red meat, and vitamin C-rich foods eaten in the same meal improve absorption.
If your hair has been shedding more than usual, iron is worth testing before it is worth supplementing.
A Warning About Hair Supplements
Biotin is the most widely sold hair supplement, and there is a genuine safety issue with it that has nothing to do with whether it works.
Biotin interferes with laboratory blood tests. The FDA has issued a safety communication about it, and the most serious concern is troponin—the test used to diagnose a heart attack. Biotin can cause falsely low troponin results, and the FDA has reported a case in which a patient taking high-dose biotin died after a test returned a falsely low result and a heart attack was missed. It can also skew thyroid test results, which is relevant here because thyroid problems cause hair changes.
If you take biotin, tell your doctor and tell the laboratory before any blood test. Beyond that, biotin supplementation is generally only useful if you are actually deficient, which is uncommon, and a blood test will establish that.
When Hair Changes Are Worth Investigating
Damage is a cosmetic problem. Loss and thinning can be a medical one, and several causes are straightforward to identify.
- Sudden or heavy shedding, particularly two to three months after an illness, surgery, childbirth, significant stress or rapid weight loss
- Patchy loss in defined circles, which needs a proper diagnosis
- Thinning at the hairline or temples from tight styling, which is worth catching early
- A red, sore, scaly or itchy scalp
- Thinning alongside other symptoms—fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold and dry skin together can point to an underactive thyroid, which NIDDK lists among its symptoms as "dry skin or dry, thinning hair"
- Shedding with fatigue and breathlessness, which suggests checking iron
See a healthcare provider or dermatologist for any of those. Thyroid function and iron are both simple blood tests, and both causes are treatable once identified.
A Realistic Routine
- Wash as often as suits your hair, using lukewarm rather than hot water. There is no universally correct frequency.
- Condition the mid-lengths and ends every wash, and skip the roots if your hair gets oily.
- Oil before washing once or twice a week if your ends are dry.
- Squeeze rather than rub, and let hair dry to damp before any heat.
- Detangle from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb.
- Use heat protectant and the lowest temperature that works.
- Wear it loose when you can, and vary where you tie it when you cannot.
- Trim every 8 to 12 weeks.
