Wellness Retreats for Anxiety and Depression in the Catskills

Published on 9 September, 2026

Most people who look for a retreat like this are not in crisis. They are coping—often very competently, often for far too long—and running on a reserve that ran out months ago.

They sleep badly. They are short with people who did not earn it. They are doing the sensible things, or trying to, in weeks that leave little room for any of them. What they need is not another appointment to fit in, but a stretch of days where recovery is the only thing on the schedule.

That is what YO1 is for. What follows sets out exactly what that involves—including what it is not, which matters more here than it does in most places.

What YO1 Is, and What It Is Not

Anxiety and depression are conditions people sometimes seek help for urgently, and you should not have to read to the bottom of a page to find out whether you are in the right place.
What YO1 is
What YO1 is not
  • Not a medical center. YO1 does not engage physicians on staff.
  • Not a treatment facility. Its licensed and certified practitioners do not diagnose, treat, operate on or prescribe for any condition.
  • Not a substitute for therapy or medication. Nothing offered here replaces clinical care, and no one here will advise you to change prescribed treatment.
  • Not appropriate for a mental health crisis, for acute psychiatric care, or for medically supervised withdrawal from alcohol or drugs.
If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please contact a healthcare professional or a crisis line rather than booking a stay. In the United States, calling or texting 988 reaches the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, free and around the clock.

Who a Stay Suits

Getting the fit right matters, so here it is plainly.
A retreat like this tends to suit you ifIt is probably not the right choice if
You are managing, but depleted, and have been for monthsYou are in crisis or need urgent mental health support
You already have care in place and want to add to itYou are looking for something to replace therapy or medication
Your sleep, energy and patience have all quietly degradedYou need medically supervised detox or withdrawal management
You know what would help and cannot fit any of it into your weekYou need a diagnosis, or a clinician to manage your condition
You want structure rather than a spa menu to choose fromYou want a flexible holiday with wellness available on the side
You can give it at least three nightsYou can only spare a night or two

The Two Programs

Both begin with a consultation on arrival, both run a minimum of three nights, and both are all-inclusive.
Built around calming therapies and daily practice. Inclusions:
  • 1 Aroma Massage or Abhyangam
  • Acupuncture, delivered by licensed acupuncturists
  • Choice of 1 Mud Therapy or Hydrotherapy—jacuzzi bath, underwater massage, whirlpool or immersion bath
  • Daily yoga and meditation
  • Vegetarian breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus a juice
  • Access to the wellness facilities—fitness center, Olympic-sized indoor pool, hot tub, steam, sauna, walking and biking trails, game room, parking and Wi-Fi
A similar shape, weighted toward relaxation and nervous-system settling. Inclusions:
  • Aroma Massage
  • Acupuncture
  • Choice of 1 Mud Therapy or Hydrotherapy
  • Yoga and meditation
  • Vegetarian breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus a juice
  • Full access to the wellness facilities
Which one fits is a conversation rather than a checkbox, and the Health Counselor may adjust either around what you actually arrive with. Both programs run a minimum of three nights, and guests are asked to arrive early enough to complete their consultations that afternoon.

Why Several Consecutive Days Does Something a Weekly Appointment Cannot

This is the real argument for a retreat, and it is worth making plainly rather than atmospherically.
Look at what actually helps anxiety and low mood, and almost all of it is daily: movement, consistent sleep and wake times, daylight, food that supports rather than spikes you, and a genuine reduction in incoming demand. Each is manageable alone. Arranging all of them at once, in an ordinary week, during a period when your capacity is already reduced, is close to impossible—which is precisely why people know what would help and still do not do it.
A structured stay removes the arranging. The day is already built. The food is already decided. The therapies are already booked, and they repeat daily rather than once a fortnight—which is far closer to the pattern the research on these therapies is actually based on.
The evidence for the individual components is reasonable and worth stating accurately. A 2024 network meta-analysis in the BMJ, pooling 218 studies and 14,170 participants, found yoga produced the second largest effect of any exercise modality studied for depression, and identified it as one of the two people were most likely to keep doing. For acupuncture, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cites a 2018 review of 64 studies covering 7,104 participants indicating it may produce a moderate reduction in depression severity, while noting most of those studies were low quality. These are genuinely encouraging findings, and they are offered here as support rather than as a cure.

What a Day Looks Like

  • Early morning—yoga and meditation, before the day has a chance to start making demands
  • Breakfast—vegetarian, at a set time
  • Morning—scheduled therapies from your plan
  • Lunch—the main meal of the day, in the middle of the day
  • Afternoon—remaining therapies, or the trails, pool, steam and sauna
  • Dinner—light, early
  • Evening—deliberately quiet. There is very little here to stay up for, which is the point rather than an oversight.
Kriyas—yogic cleansing practices including Jal Neti and Kapalbhati breathing—run on Saturday and Sunday mornings with certified instructors.

The Setting

YO1 sits on more than 1,300 acres in the Catskill Mountains at Monticello, New York, on the historic Kutsher property—roughly 90 miles and about two hours from New York City.
The setting is not decoration. A large part of what an overloaded nervous system responds to is the removal of input, and several days somewhere with trails, water and very little noise changes what your body is being asked to react to. Accommodation is in Lakeview King rooms, Lakeview Double King rooms and Lakeview King suites.

Getting the Medical Side Right

A few things worth settling before you book, all of which make a stay work better rather than being obstacles to it.
  • Keep your own healthcare provider in the picture. Tell them you are going, and tell them about any complementary approaches you take up afterward.
  • Do not change prescribed medication around a stay. Not before, not during, not after, without the provider who prescribed it. Nobody at YO1 will advise otherwise.
  • Mention anything relevant at your consultation—pregnancy, blood thinners, a pacemaker, bleeding disorders, recent surgery, or any diagnosed condition. It shapes which therapies are appropriate for you.
  • If your symptoms are severe or worsening, get clinical care first. A retreat is a good addition to a stable situation and a poor substitute for treatment of an acute one.

In Plain Terms

YO1 is not a medical center and does not have physicians on staff; its practitioners do not diagnose, treat or prescribe. What a stay offers is a plan built around you, qualified practitioners delivering it, food and rest arranged for you, and several days in which nothing else is competing for your attention.
For someone who has been coping on empty and cannot find room in their week to change that, it is often the most useful thing available. For someone who needs clinical care, it is not a replacement for it—and we would rather say so here than have you find out after booking.

FAQs

Q: Is YO1 a treatment center for depression or anxiety?

A: No. YO1 is a wellness resort, not a medical center, and it does not engage physicians on staff. Its licensed and certified practitioners do not diagnose, treat or prescribe. The programs are designed to support rest, routine and wellbeing alongside clinical care, not to replace it.

Q: Can a wellness retreat help with anxiety or depression?

A: It can support you, particularly if the problem is that you know what would help and cannot fit it into your week. A structured stay concentrates daily movement, consistent sleep and meal times, therapies and rest into one place. It is an addition to appropriate care rather than an alternative to it.

Q: How long is the minimum stay?

A: Three nights for both the Anxiety Management and the Depression and Stress Management programs. Guests are asked to arrive early enough to complete their consultations that afternoon.

Q: What is included?

A: Both programs are all-inclusive: a consultation with a Health Counselor, scheduled therapies, daily yoga and meditation, vegetarian breakfast, lunch and dinner plus a juice, and full access to the wellness facilities including the pool, hot tub, steam, sauna and trails.

Q: Which program should I choose?

A: That is settled at your consultation rather than at booking. The Anxiety Management Program leans toward calming therapies including acupuncture and an Aroma Massage or Abhyangam; the Depression and Stress Management Program has a similar shape weighted toward relaxation. The Health Counselor will adjust either around what you arrive with.

Q: Should I stop my medication before coming?

A: No. Never change prescribed medication because of a retreat, before, during or after, without the provider who prescribed it. Nobody at YO1 will advise you to, and the programs are designed to sit alongside existing treatment.

Q: Can I come if I am currently in therapy?

A: Yes, and many guests are. Keep your provider informed that you are going, and mention any diagnosed condition at your arrival consultation so the plan can be shaped appropriately.

Q: What if I am in crisis?

A: Please seek clinical help rather than booking a stay. YO1 is not equipped for acute mental health care. In the United States, calling or texting 988 reaches the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, free and available around the clock.

Q: Where is YO1 and how do I get there?

A: 420 Anawana Lake Road, Monticello, New York, in the Catskill Mountains—roughly 90 miles and about two hours by road from New York City, on a 1,300-acre property.

Q: Are meals included, and can I eat what I like?

A: All meals are included and are vegetarian throughout, served at set times as part of the program. That suits many guests and is a genuine dealbreaker for others, so it is worth knowing before you book.

Q: Is there a minimum age?

A: Yes. YO1 welcomes guests aged 16 and over.
