TRY FERTILITY YOGA TO SUPPORT REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

Nowadays, the pursuit of professional success has trumped the need to settle down and start a family among modern individuals. Added to this are stress, health problems and tight deadlines, all of which have a detrimental impact on the human body. Though it may not be visible immediately; late nights, strict deadlines, skipped meals and hurried lifestyles have a long term effect on both your physical and mental health. Infertility is one of the issues that has come to be because of such erratic lifestyles.

When the word 'yoga' is mentioned people generally associate it to anti-ageing and losing weight. The fact of the matter is that yoga has many other benefits apart from flexibility and toning such as improving the fertility rates among modern individuals.

“Yoga is a great way to help you prepare for pregnancy. Since ages it has been propagated for relaxation of mind and body. Even though yoga does not directly guarantee conception; it acts by reducing stress levels,” says Dr Rajalaxmi Walavalkar, Consultant, IVF and Reproductive Surgery, Cocoon Fertility.

Fertility benefits of Yoga

Performing Yoga regularly stimulates the ovaries, strengthens the back muscles and purifies the energy channels in the body. It is also known to make the groin, hips and spine more flexible in addition to reducing stress, anxiety and tension.

Yoga has also shown to improve the blood supply to the uterus and ovaries. It also helps in resetting your endocrine system thereby aiding the hormonal balance.

Fertility yoga for reproductive health

There is a variety of yoga that a person can perform. Each yoga pose is known to strengthen your mind but also helps in regaining balance in your body and reproductive system.

The concept of fertility yoga has come to be to help bolster reproductive health. Fertility yoga is one of the best ways to support reproductive health as it is known to suppress stress and also helps you prepare for pregnancy and conception. It uses key yoga poses that will nurture and strengthen the endocrine and reproductive system. Your endocrine system is essential to maintain a proper hormonal balance. Practising fertility yoga promotes healthy endocrine function and also supports the reproductive system.

Yogasanas

  1. Bee Breath (Bhramari Pranayama) and Seated Forward Fold (Paschimottanasana) reduces anxiety and worries while improving the psychological state of mind.
  2. Reclining Bound Angle (Supta Baddha Konasana) helps in reducing discomfort associated with fertility.
  3. The “Bhujangasan-cobra pose” has numerous benefits. It helps increase the flow of blood flow to the ovaries and the uterus. This aids in creating hormonal balance, as well as the production of cervical mucus that makes the journey of the sperm to the egg easier.
  4. Certain yoga poses act on endocrine glands which affect fertility; eg. Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana) helps stimulate the thyroid gland, the dysfunction of which can lead to infertility. Supported Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana) also acts on the thyroid gland.
  5. Legs Up The Wall (Viparita Karani) -This yoga asana helps in retaining sperms close to the uterus.

Making yoga part of your daily routine

“Yoga can definitely be used for fertility benefits alone or as an adjunct to different fertility modalities. It should be an integral part of our routine to achieve the said goal” added Dr Anagha Karkhanis, Director Cocoon Fertility.

Yoga is an incremental process where over time you can improve your strength, flexibility and balance. Begin by doing fertility yoga 2-3 times a week and you can increase it up to 5 times a week if you so desire.
